VLOG: steamy race debates & acting in the barn of white a** Vermont | Tarek Ali
follow my Instagram ➭ @itstarekali in such a tumultuous time, 15 black artists in search of joy leave their respective homes to stay on a farm in the woods of Vermont. Through farming, acting, debating, and ventures into spirituality and witchcraft, this community is able to cultivate black joy despite being in a white a** state. This 4 part docuseries is told from the perspective of Tarek Ali who edited and shot every clip for the purposes of Youtube. The entire retreat and *official* film (documentary) that is coming in 2021 was funded and curated by Jag Productions and Stevie Walker Webb. You can follow the entire Journey and initiative on Instagram at @Returntoblackjoy @JAGProductionVT Instagram ➭ @itstarekali twitter ➭ @itstarekali snapchat & tiktok ➭ @itstarekali business contact ➭ email@example.com 0:00-01:47 intro 1:47 What we are doing here on the farm. Every day everyone is given the opportunity to come up with a session or exercise for us to use our black culture to bring joy back to ourselves. In this episode you see Jordan E Cooper explain why Folktales are so important to our culture and how we can use them to return and cultivate new joy for ourselves. 6:42 Is white liberalism annoying? Raven is angered after she sees a sign with some of the names of the black people who have been murdered by police (on a white farm). This sparks a conversation about what Activism from white people looks like and how that white liberalism can be just as annoying as racism. What do you think? 12:22 A debate on Race and skin color! Musiki became one of my closest friends on this retreat and we are so different!! She is a mother in her 40s from Texas & Mississipi and I am a 22 gay gnc man from Maryland. In this conversation, we discuss our different ideas of what being 'mixed' means. It gets a little steamy but in the end, we respect each other's thoughts and realize we are just speaking from different experiences and perspectives. 19:59 Acting out our adaptation of the folktales that spoke to us! Re-telling the stories that have been passed down for generations to reflect our joy in today's time! F A Q what’s your name? Tarek Ali (Tuh-reek Ali) are you muslim? no but yes? Leikeli47: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
March 11, 2019 | Rodney Carmichael -- Remember that scene in The Color Purple when Shug Avery was somewhere between the juke joint and her daddy's church, singing at the top of her lungs, and the Saturday night sinners got all mixed in with the Sunday morning saints, and it was hard to tell if they were praising the high heavens or raising holy hell? That's what Leikeli47's Tiny Desk felt like in the flesh. She came masked up, as always, the better to catch a glimpse of her soul. And there was so much soul to bare. Backed by a four-piece band of bruhs dressed as uniformed TSA agents (introduced as "the TSA Band, taking flight with me"), Leikeli47 and her working-class crew proceeded to transform Bob Boilen's Tiny Desk into something akin to a pulpit or a mid-century parlor room. Portier sat hunched over the upright piano, while Justus West plucked guitar strings, Simba Scott tapped out bass lines and Timmy Manson Jr. kept everything in sync on drums. They traversed the entirety of black music, translating her hip-hop and afro-electro empowerment anthems to live instruments by jazzing up songs like "Attitude," from her 2017 Wash & Set major-label debut, and laying down the vamps on "Girl Blunt" from her 2018 LP Acrylic. It wasn't genre-bending as much as it was a musical remembering of the blues that brought her here — from the hoods of Brooklyn to down-south Virginia and everywhere else she's called home. In an era when women are no longer the anomaly but rap's new standard bearers, Leikeli47 deserves all the praise for pushing the genre forward with both feet steeped firmly in tradition. Set List "Attitude" "Droppin'" "Ciaa" "Let's Go Get Stoned (Portier's Vibe)" "Girl Blunt" "Money" Musicians Leikeli47: lead vocals; Timmy Manson Jr: drums; Justus West: guitar; Simba Scott: bass; Portier: piano, vocals Credits Producers: Rodney Carmichael, Morgan Noelle Smith; Creative Director: Bob Boilen; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Morgan Noelle Smith, Kimani Oletu, Beck Harlan; Associate Producer: Bobby Carter; Production Assitant: Adelaide Sandstrom; Photo: Amr Alfiky/NPR
