Hey Anii Gang,
I've been natural for Three years and so many people ask me how do I deal with my hair and how did I get it to grow so fast. Trust me it wasn't easy but I did it and now I'm ready to share how I managed my hard to managed hair.
So hmmm where do we start... CURLY, KINKY and COILY hair could be one of the most frustrating things ever. We can talk about the knots, the breakage, the shrinkage, or the matted-ness. LOL where do you guys wanna start?
Many people don't understand that our hair is apart of our temple. Our spirits reside in our temples. You must take care of yourself to be well as a whole. Taking care of your mind, body and spirit will also take care of your hair. Our type 4 hair will always tell us when we aren't taking care of ourselves. The less water and nutrients inside and out the more tangles and breakage. The more water and nutrients the more shrinkage and growth.
Once you begin to eat right, drink more water, manage your stress, and exercise (the usual) the more you will notice a difference. When it comes to the outside; knowing the right products, frequent trims, and less maintenance the easier your hair will start to flourish.
I've learned a lot within the past three years of being natural. The main thing I learned is that every individuals hair loves certain ingredients, that is what does the trick.
Through all the struggle and strife of trying to deal with our natural hair we end up damaging and breaking off our luxurious locks.
Once you know your hair type; density, porosity, and curl pattern you'll definitely learn what you need to succeed on your hair journey. It may be the type of conditioner, oil, cream or de-tangler but something will get the job done to reduce the hassle.
My hair is 4A-4B hair, thick, coarse, and my once chemically treated hair is growing out so it's half low porosity/ high porosity. This sounds like a nightmare, I KNOW. Most of you understand my struggle and the one's who don't have it quite as bad great for you, "You go ahead and shine with your comb flowing through your strands" LOL.
For the rest of you, let me tell you how I got to the point where a brush could get through my kinks! I learned that my hair loves moisture, loves water, and product! Some of you naturals grow your hair by doing stretched and protective styles. However, I am a lazy natural who thrives off of wash n' go's so I have to try a little harder with the moisture.
For me THICK products get the job done. Thick slip conditioners, thick cream leave in conditioner, thick hair mask, thick moisture cream, and thick oils. For people with looser curls they love light weight products so it doesn't weigh their hair down but for us 4 type hair textures the thicker the better and this way we don't have to glob on a bunch of product to get the same feeling. SAVE YOUR COINS!
Also knowing which moisture techniques work for you helps a lot with growth. I learned that deep treatment mask and hot oil treatments work wonders. Not only that but instead of the LOC method the LCO (Leave in conditioner, cream, then oil) method works better for me. The way I sleep with my hair is a huge factor as well. Like I said I'm a lazy natural so sometimes I forget a satin pillow case or head scarf but putting my hair in a puff is always a must. This way my ends are protected and the moisture is concealed in my scalp. These techniques really help me retain moisture.
