Reverence.On December 16th, 1969, a group of sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise boarded a submarine in the Pacific Ocean and explored the greatest underground mine on earth, the Mariana Trench, located on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. The explorers came from Submarine Group 9, also known as the John C. Butler Group of the United States Navy. This is where the beginning of a great American tradition occurred — the crew found photos that the crew had taken down in the sub in Guam when the sub was decommissioned. The president of the United States, Richard Nixon, was there in Philadelphia to honor the crew and their accomplishment. Nixon is seen in the top photo below, with crew members on the left and the commander in chief on the right. During the visit, the US Navy dedicated the new San Diego Naval History Museum on the main deck of the ship. On the museum floor, a collection of submarine artifacts and a model of the USS Enterprise is on display, as well as the entrance to the submarine.
